Turkey Club at Mill St. Pub

This has been quite a special weekend. I must say that I’ve always thought Family Day was a little bit silly; however I must admit that having my mother be able to come to the city for a visit thanks to a stat holiday isn’t the worst thing in the world. She arrived on Sunday afternoon and after a few hours of chatting and shopping we decided to head to the Distillery District for some dinner. We ended up at Mill St. Brewery — a restaurant that’s famous for its Organic Lager that has become very popular in Ontario.

It was busy for a Sunday night, but only about a five-minute wait until a table was cleared for us. There was a wedding party enjoying some celebratory drinks and the whole atmosphere of the place was just so positive and cheerful. We sat in a booth in the far back corner and had an excellent view of the entire pub.

Inside the restaurant is a very old-worldly décor. Brick walls, antique tables and vintage posters showcase the unique history of the Distillery District. The fact that it is a brewery makes for an even more interesting dining experience. It’s great to have the beer in your glass made at the same location where it is served.

Our friendly server greeted us and told us the daily special. My mom and I both opted for the Turkey Club sandwich. She enjoyed a bottle of Smirnoff Ice and I ordered a pint of Original Organic Lager, fresh from the tap.

The food came out and it looked fantastic! I ordered mine with sweet potato fries, which were perfectly crisp. The turkey was sliced evenly and paired wonderfully with the aioli. I think my favourite part about the entire sandwich was the bread. The ancient grains bread was perfectly toasted and just the right texture to bring the whole dish together. We chatted some more over dinner and were sufficiently stuffed by the end of our meal.

I think it’s important to explore the different districts and neighbourhoods in the city to see what’s available and get to know what you like! The folks at Mill St. have made quite a name for themselves and it’s nice to relax and eat in a place that’s surrounded by so much history. If your mother is visiting or you find yourself south of King St….make your way down to the Distillery for a pint of Organic Lager or indulge in some sweet potato fries, you’ll be glad you did!
